Chapter Six
Everything happened so fast. One moment, Sasha introduced the idea of buying the bakery to Kallie. The next thing she knew, heâd gone and done it.
Katia and Lev invited them to dinner at the bakery to celebrate the change in ownership. The four of them sat at two tables pushed together, set with a fine tablecloth, Katiaâs best china, and lit with a grouping of tea candles. Sasha and Kallie had dressed for dinner as though they were going to a five-star restaurant. They were served by a waiter in a tux.
âI know you must be disappointed we arenât at a fancy restaurant. But I have only been to dinner two times in this restaurant. Tonight, of course, being one of them,â Katia explained, her voice rough with emotion. She gripped Levâs hand. The two quietly exchanged looks, finding strength in one another.
Sasha and Kallie held hands as well.
âThe first time was the night that it became ours,â Katia finished.
She turned away and touched her palm to her mouth.
âWe bought it, of course, from my grandfather,â Lev explained with a slight smile. âOur children arenât interested in the business. We put them through college. They give their blessing to Sasha as the new owner.â
âKallie and I will own it together,â Sasha said, tightening his hold on Kallieâs hand.
Kallie suddenly felt overwhelmed with the responsibility buying the bakery entailed. She wasnât signing her name to a small business. She was buying a piece of local history. Sheâd known that before she sat down to dinner with the Attmans. But sitting here, across from them and bearing witness to the tragedy of needing to let the business go, she was overwhelmed with the responsibility of taking on such a project. Especially one that meant so much to so many people.
âWe know that things will be a little different...â Katia said hesitantly.
âRight.â Sasha nodded. âWeâll keep everything as is here for a while. Iâve purchased the place next door with an eye toward giving the bakery more space, with an expanded dining room. Things will carry on here same as they always have while the work is done in that space, then the bakery will move next door to continue operation while this side is given a facelift to match. That way we never have to close doors or risk losing any customers. Then, when the renovations are complete, the wall will be removed between the two units. I think you would be pleased with the results.â
Katiaâs eyelids fluttered. âThis is all so much!â
Sasha touched her hand. âI know itâs a lot,â he said softly. âWe, of course, will not be changing the exterior; weâre even keeping the name of the salon on the side of the other building. The neighborhood wouldnât look right if I took it down.â
âThat place has been around since before you were born,â Katia said with a smile. âI was so sorry when they closed last year.â
âYes, maâam,â Sasha replied. âYouâll find very little changing here inside the bakery.
